West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project

The West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP) is a non-profit organization that fights for environmental justice in West Oakland. Due to the presence of freeways and industrial pollution from the Port of Oakland, residents of West Oakland bear the brunt of Oakland’s impacts on the environment. The mission of the WOEIP is to increase awareness of these issues and promote public health, air quality, and smarter land use. The project provides motivational leader development for West Oakland residents, and informs locals of advocacy tools that they can use to help bring about legislative change. Recent efforts of the WOEIP include the Oakland Academy of Science and Sustainability, which is an outdoor classroom that teaches students about issues of climate adaptation, green infrastructure, and changing landscapes due to climate change.
