On Wednesday, August 12, 2015, the Coastal Commission unanimously adopted the Sea Level Rise Policy Guidance document as interpretive guidelines for Local Coastal Programs and Coastal Development Permit applicants. The Guidance is intended to assist in the preparation for sea level rise within the context of the Coastal Act.
The Guidance recognizes that impacts of sea level rise will be felt at the local level, rendering local responses critical to effectively managing these impacts. The Guidance provides a framework for addressing sea level rise in Local Coastal Programs and Coastal Development Permits, with the goal of ensuring that adaptation occurs in a way that protects both coastal resources and public safety and allows for sustainable economic growth. This process includes identifying how and where to apply different adaptation mechanisms based on Coastal Act requirements , other relevant laws and policies, acceptable levels of risk , and community priorities.
