The State of California has been supporting regional climate change research for more than a decade. These studies have complemented research at the national level and have been designed to inform climate policy deliberations and actions in California. This Research Catalog provides basic information about past and ongoing climate change related studies that state agencies have conducted or commissioned since the early 2000s. The purpose of this catalog is to document California’s research efforts and to facilitate the exchange of information.

    The purpose of this agreement is to improve the ability of research aircraft to detect leaks in natural gas transmission lines. This includes investigating ways to verify the accuracy of the “back trajectories” that are essential for locating the position of the leak and enabling differentiation between biogenic and natural gas-based methane emissions. 500-13-005


  3. Top-Down Quantification of Methane Emissions from California's Natural Gas System

    This research will quantitatively survey methane emissions across the sub-sectors of California's natural gas infrastructure. At the regional scale, tower-based speciation of methane emissions will be used to quantify the natural gas component. At the facility scale, methane emissions for 3-4 representative natural gas production and processing facilities across California will be estimated using air and ground based measurements. To the extent possible, this task will be coordinated with the existing PIER project on mitigation of emissions from natural gas facility components to measure emissions from facilities where mitigation activities are being planned. Air and ground based measurements will also be used on the transmission and distribution scale for example sections of infrastructure. Finally, at the building scale, high precision measurements of building airflow and time-resolved isotopic methane gas measurement will be used to quantify emissions in ten to twenty buildings. This is a proof of concept study for homes to develop and test a method that would be more fully implemented in future studies. This initial work is needed because there is some anecdotal evidence that our homes and buildings may be an important source of fugitive methane emissions.
